Lead designer and Contributing Business Strategist for the Largest Cannabis Production and Processing Facility in the USA
CKC assisted the owners and core management team in crucial space planning, equipment selection, and permitting efforts in a comprehensive design engagement to restore an under-utilized greenhouse complex into an advanced cannabis production/processing facility. As part of this engagement, we delivered the following:
- Acted as a Trusted Strategic Advisor
- Space Planning and Layout
- Permitting and Code Compliance
THE Pharm is an Arizona based medical (and soon to be recreational) cannabis production and processing operation. It is currently the largest licensed facility in the United States, and encompassed over 500,000sf of space.
Calyx King dedicated itself to understanding The Pharm’s objectives and needs, in terms of market-position, capitalization, code restrictions, and timetable. At the time of engagement, the company had already selected the property but had not began the construction process. CKC helped lead/guide the design and space planning efforts.
Once the business plan was formalized and the critical path established, CKC headed up the design of the renovations to the existing 400ksf structures as well as the new 100ksf of new construction. In this role, CKC analyzed current conditions, building permit requirements, state regulations, and production/processing needs in order to create a state-of-the-art operation. This included working with architects and engineers to spec the parameters of the mechanical systems (electrical, HVAC, water, etc) and ensure that they met the design requirements. Equipment selection and sourcing was also a large part of this process.
In parallel to the facility design, CKC assisted in the product matrix selection. This started with an in-depth analysis of product manufacturing needs and extraction methodologies. We worked hand-in-hand with the Director of Processing to bring her concepts to fruition. In doing so, CKC helped select all of the extraction equipment, post processing gear, and product specific materials. CKC also worked with the Director of Operations to layout this equipment in the most effective manner so that the flow of the product through the different departments occurs as efficiently as possible. GMP and streamline methodology principals were employed during this process from beginning to end.
A 400,000sf greenhouse production facility was retrofitted for year round controlled cannabis operations. In addition, an existing headhouse structure was expanded to almost 100,000sf of drying, processing, extraction, and product manufacturing space.
